Get a book at an auto parts store.your best bet is to swing by an auto parts store like autozone and look at thier repair manuals section and you should be able to get an idea of what is involved. if you have a bit of mechanical knowhow it's not that difficult, but changing drum brakes is definately more difficult that replacing pads on the front. it should not be that expensive as long as the drums aren't scored. if all you have to replace are the shoes, it'll be around $40 for those at a parts store. but if the shoes are worn away and the metal backing of the shoe has damaged the inside of the drum then you are in for a bit more of an expense. while you are at the parts store, go ahead and price these.
good luckBrake shoes are a dirty job. Disc brake pads are easier.
I have done both but heres a word of advise.
Brakes can mean the difference between you living or quick death if you are not familiar with the ins and outs.
Shoe replacement is dirty and not something you want to learn if possible considering the risk. Midas does shoes for around $100 a wheel with a lifetime guarentee.
Life expectancy with improperly done brakes may be like the lottery. If lucky you might just get by. If unlucky you might lose your life or cause someone else to lose theirs
For $200 you can rest easy that when you REALLY NEED to stop , you will.

I hate my uniform , I Haft to wear a white T-Shirt (tucked into my skirt ) , Gray Skirt (knee length) , Navy Blue Cardy , Navy Blue Knee High Socks (I push them down ) , black leather shoes %26amp; A Blue Tie .
We are not allowed , Earrings (Only Studs) , Bracelets , Make Up (I Only Wear Mascara %26amp; Lip Gloss )

If you really have to tuck your skirt in, do it loosly so its not as tight in your skirt.
I think it would look cuter if you wore your socks knee high - just below the knee. You can even get some with tiny bows on the side of them. if they have to be blue then just glue them on yourself.
I'd wear some black dolly shoes (or ballerina shoes). Mine have gold studs on them.
wear a very thin knecklace under your shirt so its not very visible.
pleated skirts look cute too.
could you get a nice jacket and bag?
experiment with differnt hairstyles everday. If im in a rush, i tend to just do a ten second backcomp in my hair and stick a bow in. its dead quick and looks sweet. or ill plait it before i go to bed and then wake up and just scruch some mousse in to it. same also very quick.
I wouldnt start rolling up your skirt or wearing your tie really short though. Im 15 and i never have. It looks tacky.

What do you think of the first two chapters of a book I'm writing?
I have a hard time getting started, but this is what I have. I'll introduce the characters in the next chapter I think. I like to write in prose. What do you think?
Chapter 1
Soft rainy overcast. That day where the car ahead's brake lights blur six inches past the bumper through the window in the haze. Little droplets and their red borders creeping down those glass eyes like tears until they're wiped away. The red. It's good. It's the only color in a somber palette of gray. It's that winter rain, where the air smells like evergreen. Where when the drips drop on the dirt, the dry mist that rises is like the dead raising their hands for help. The city sedated, the music quiet, something happens. The Usuals with their eyes on their three-stripe adidas tennis shoes look up. The Usuals, who have never played tennis, look around. At puddles on the ground and the walls that shield the crawling cars. Lack of shadows that make everything blend into a utopia of melancholy. The Usuals perk up for some reason. The world is changing pace, so should they, they think, they know, they act. Generics playing in the Usuals stereo. They turn it down. They think, they figure, they listen. They listen to the road. To the cars driving by them. How their cars bend like elastic back and forth every time a van goes speeding by. Today, they think. Today is the day that they break away, they think. They know. They wish. The gray is too much. Eyes, half open, the Usuals sip their Folgers and think. They look around, maybe for the first time in a week. Maybe a year. Maybe a lifetime. Foot alternating, pedal to pedal, stop go, stop go, they look, they hope. They hope for a car accident. Maybe something graphic. Today, it's the day. Pretty soon the sun comes out and the brake lights damper, the droplets evaporate, the red is thrown back into the palette of supposed brightness. The Usuals, their half horizontal lips fold into the pissed off crescendo that they enjoy so much. The worms who lacked oxygen find their way to the sidewalk. They fry. The Usuals didn't notice. The worms, whose lives ended so that the Usuals could see. They did, for a minute. They saw, they noticed, they hoped. And then they forgot. And then there will come soft rains.
Chapter 2
On the corner of Yale and Second is a school with four hundred students. Ninth through twelfth grade, none of them can stand it for one second. It's one of those schools that, in the sixties when the Usuals built it for two hundred thousand dollars, must have looked futuristic. Now it looks dated and dusty, like a science exhibit from nineteen fifty six. The students share a similar sentiment. The teaching techniques were trendy when the school was brought up. Backhand rap-pings, public embarrassment, and other corporal punishment that only a school with a reputation for discipline can possibly justify. Uniforms, punishment, a mass of masks disguising the very individuality that threatens to poison the foundation. Here is where a hero is born, that rises above the toxic air of oppression and stands with chest puffed and gawks at the authority that attempts to enslave him. No such hero is bred in this place. No such hero is needed for the lives of all four hundred students to run smoothly and slyly, slipping between the gaps of their pencils and their ears, studiously awaiting the next weekend so they can get consume whatever they can find and escape for a few hours. Monday morning is back to business, though. No questions asked. No such questions are needed for the lives of the 16-1 ratio faculty members to smoothly run through their job. Why complicate things. Twenty ruler taps train the slobs for society. Twenty ruler taps to save the world.
Tuesday, the drizzle dampens the decks where the masses wait for the bell to puncture their ears and hopes. Nihilism is instilled subconsciously in every wanderer there. They just have to reach the end. Just have to finish to Friday. No heroes, few people, but some remain, some resilient residents remain intact. They don't stand under the cover of the pathway between the two corridors. They stand in the cool rain and let their clothes get wet. They look up into the sky and curse God and let the rain fall on their faces and let it sting their eyes and let it make them uncomfortable. They smile a smile that is hard to define. A smile that tells the masses that they are alive and they don't wait for Friday to live. No heroes, no questions, just people. It looks interesting, but I honestly have no idea what is going on. Form your plot. Make it clear. You have good description skills, just make sure you tone it down and let the reader know what's going on.

Rc Nitro wheels move when the car is in neutral. the clutch is fine please help ???
hi there i have a 1:10 nitro gas car. it has 18cxp vertex engine. When i start the car the wheel start to spin really fast in neutral, i can stop this by applying the brake. I have checked the clutch shoes and they are prefectly fine. To stop the car moving when started, you need to place the car on a stand so that all wheels are clear of the ground and start it up. Once running turn the idle screw until the engine sounds like it's almost stalling, then turn the screw about 1 - 2 turns the other way. This should be around the optimum running mixture for the car. so only minor adjustments are needed.My rc wheels move in neutral why could this be ???Hi

Why cant i walk away?
Ive been w/the same guy for over 7 years, almost 8. We also have a 5 year old together, whom is going to be the 1 they%26#039;ll suffer the most if i do leave. So do I, do i leave a man who never shows me in any way that he cares about me except when he wants sex, then he does a complete turn around %26amp; is the nicest guy. When he%26#039;s not, he is dis-respectful %26amp; he can be so dam cold! I'm from a town where the girls are total witches. They literately brake girls down thinking they are ugly and fat. I want to change. I really do. I get dressed in shorts throw my hair up then go to the park to go walking but I get nervous when I see other people there and then I chicken out and leave. I want to be how I used to be. I can't even stand looking at myself sometimes, just because my confidence level goes negative every time I look at my body. I'm depressed because of the way I look. I need advice, have you been in my shoes before? I'm starting college in August so I have a clean slate, I want to be the fun outgoing girl I used to be that everyone loved. I still do Callanetics which was a fitness video workout from the 1980s - you can buy the DVD on ebay. It's dated, but it seriously tones you up :)
Before you do anything drastic ....are you sure you're overweight? It sounds like those girls in your town have confidence issues, which is why they put others down to desperately try and make themselves feel better (if you are happy in yourself it doesn't even enter your head to make others suffer). I recently bumped into a girl who used to bully others at school, and she admitted it was nothing to do with the victims, and was everything to do with hating her self - she was basically jealous of everyone and that's why she lashed out.I'm 18. I drive a 2001 Ford Taurus, is all this recommended auto work necessary?
A few days ago I took my '01 Taurus into the dealership for an oil change and had asked them to check my brakes because I suspected I needed new brake pads.
After the oil change, the auto guy called me and said that my brake pads were all down to 1mm and that I may also need to replace one front rotor.
I called a few days later to get a quote for those replacements and the gal said she would type up a quote pulling the information from what was put in my file.
My jaw dropped to the floor when all of the following was included on my quote:
-Both front brake pads (expected)
-Both rear brake pads (expected)
-Front rotors (est. $198)
-Rear drums (est. $215)
-Rear shoes (est. $58)
-Wheel cylinders (est. $104)
-Hardware kit (est. $14)
-Labor estimated to be 3.8 hrs and charge of $272
Background on my car:
- 2001 Ford Taurus SES with 89,700 miles. All new tires last fall, always keep up on oil changes, all fluid levels, etc. Last fall my rear springs were replaced and I had to replace the timing belt gasket after a leak had started prior. The auto guy on the phone this week said, %26quot;everyone was impressed at how well you take care of your car. It's in perfect condition, except your brakes are low.%26quot;
There are NO leaks of brake fluid (or any fluid from beneath the hood or from the rear).
I know that sometimes rotors warp and have to be replaced, I've read that between 100,000-150,000 miles the rear drums MAY need to be replaced, and if your brake fluid is leaking, your wheel cylinders may need to be replaced.
My brake light never came on and there are no leaks. Should all of this auto work be necessary?- really? Or is the autobody trying to take me for another $940 bill?

Not only would the brake pad lining break up well before that point (relatively brittle stuff) but the metal studs that the brake lining is sintered (manufacturing process) around to help hold it to the metal backing of the pad would have long been exposed to the rotor and your car would have been making ungodly noises every time you hit the brake as the metal studs dug into the metal rotor face which you made no mention of in your posted question so im assuming thats not the case
-Front rotors (est. $198) - maybe, but there are two easy ways to check. run your finger along the rotor and feel for grooves...grooves being present will eat the new pads up at a much faster rate than a flat surface. Another way to check is most rotors have a minimum thickness specification cast into them somewhere. You can check this with calipers or even a ruler if need be. If the rotor is too thin, there is not enough metal present to handle the massive heat generated by braking and they are much more prone to warpage
-Rear drums (est. $215) - negative. Drum brake setups dont stop as well as discs but typically last FOREVER. You could also check the drums with the groove test I mentioned earlier. I had an 88 Bronco II that I put drums/brake shoes on that lasted 150k+ miles before they needed replacing
-Rear shoes (est. $58) - same as above...should not need replacing unless you drive like you are Mario freaking Andretti
-Wheel cylinders (est. $104) - typically the only reason to replace these is because they are leaking fluid. Take a flashlight and look for leaks on the inside face of the tire and back side of the axle flange (end of the axle housing where the rotor sits) assembly. Or does a 01 Taurus have IRS? I dont remember...either way brake fluid doesnt evaporate quickly at all so more than likely you would be able to see residue or some leftover evidence of a leak if one or both are bad. If you see fluid leaking out they need replacing. If your master cylinder stays full and you arent adding fluid, chances are they are fine
-Hardware kit (est. $14) - probably the springs and such that go with the new drum shoe setup but Im not exactly sure to comment reliably on this unless i knew exactly what it is
-Labor estimated to be 3.8 hrs and charge of $272 - sounds about right...how do they sleep at night?! :)

ALWAYS replace rotors in pairs, if you don't you may get braking issues due to the rotor surfaces not being the same. If the rotors are not rusted too bad they may be able to resurface them instead of replacing them.
I have seen a lot of wheel cylinders freeze up or leak. Ask them to show you why it needs to be replaced.
Always a good idea to replace the hardware kit when doing rear shoes. If you don't you take the chance of a spring rusting and breaking that will create more problems. They may be able to resurface the drums if not under spec.
Remove the rear rotors and pads from your quote and recalculate.

Background on my car:
- 2001 Ford Taurus SES with 89,700 miles. All new tires last fall, always keep up on oil changes, all fluid levels, etc. Last fall my rear springs were replaced and I had to replace the timing belt gasket after a leak had started prior. The auto guy on the phone this week said, %26quot;everyone was impressed at how well you take care of your car. It's in perfect condition, except your brakes are low.%26quot;
There are NO leaks of brake fluid (or any fluid from beneath the hood or from the rear).
I know that sometimes rotors warp and have to be replaced, I've read that between 100,000-150,000 miles the rear drums MAY need to be replaced, and if your brake fluid is leaking, your wheel cylinders may need to be replaced.
My brake light never came on and there are no leaks. Should all of this auto work be necessary?- really? Or is the autobody trying to take me for another $940 bill?
Please HELP if you can!! I have some driving trips coming up this summer and need to get whatever fixed as soon as possible, but don't want to be charged an arm and a leg if it's not necessary.

Not only would the brake pad lining break up well before that point (relatively brittle stuff) but the metal studs that the brake lining is sintered (manufacturing process) around to help hold it to the metal backing of the pad would have long been exposed to the rotor and your car would have been making ungodly noises every time you hit the brake as the metal studs dug into the metal rotor face which you made no mention of in your posted question so im assuming thats not the case
-Front rotors (est. $198) - maybe, but there are two easy ways to check. run your finger along the rotor and feel for grooves...grooves being present will eat the new pads up at a much faster rate than a flat surface. Another way to check is most rotors have a minimum thickness specification cast into them somewhere. You can check this with calipers or even a ruler if need be. If the rotor is too thin, there is not enough metal present to handle the massive heat generated by braking and they are much more prone to warpage
-Rear drums (est. $215) - negative. Drum brake setups dont stop as well as discs but typically last FOREVER. You could also check the drums with the groove test I mentioned earlier. I had an 88 Bronco II that I put drums/brake shoes on that lasted 150k+ miles before they needed replacing
-Rear shoes (est. $58) - same as above...should not need replacing unless you drive like you are Mario freaking Andretti
-Wheel cylinders (est. $104) - typically the only reason to replace these is because they are leaking fluid. Take a flashlight and look for leaks on the inside face of the tire and back side of the axle flange (end of the axle housing where the rotor sits) assembly. Or does a 01 Taurus have IRS? I dont remember...either way brake fluid doesnt evaporate quickly at all so more than likely you would be able to see residue or some leftover evidence of a leak if one or both are bad. If you see fluid leaking out they need replacing. If your master cylinder stays full and you arent adding fluid, chances are they are fine
-Hardware kit (est. $14) - probably the springs and such that go with the new drum shoe setup but Im not exactly sure to comment reliably on this unless i knew exactly what it is

ALWAYS replace rotors in pairs, if you don't you may get braking issues due to the rotor surfaces not being the same. If the rotors are not rusted too bad they may be able to resurface them instead of replacing them.
I have seen a lot of wheel cylinders freeze up or leak. Ask them to show you why it needs to be replaced.
Always a good idea to replace the hardware kit when doing rear shoes. If you don't you take the chance of a spring rusting and breaking that will create more problems. They may be able to resurface the drums if not under spec.
Remove the rear rotors and pads from your quote and recalculate.

Brake problems with my volkswagen?
Ok well i have a 1998 Volkswagen Cabrio. It's my first car and i bought it for 500 dollars from my neighbor. It's an automatic, has 187,000 miles on it and the transmission sticks a bit but all around it's been a great car. But now im having some troubles with my brakes. The brake pedal almost touches the floor and the pedal squeaks when i lay off of it. Now my dad is very good with cars and he and I changed the pads and put brand new rotors on the front tires. We also put new shoes on the back tires cause they use drums. however my pedal still goes pretty far down. Is it my master cylinder? How can we check to see what the problem is without taking it to someone and paying 100 dollars fo him to %26quot;look%26quot; at it. My dad was saying on his chevy's there are little star nobs on the back drums that allow you to adjust how far the pedal goes? Is that the things i just need to adjust the star? Those seldom need adjustment because they are self adjusting brakes. They may just need to be snugged up some. Snug the adjuster up just until the tire/wheel will turn about 1.5 turns while jacked up. Then, while in reverse, %26quot;stab%26quot; the brakes, this will help adjust them. It could be your master cylinder and is a likely culprit. After all the work you and your dad did though, let me ask you this...Did you bleed the brakes and put nothing but new and proper specification brake fluid in? If you did not do this, that could be the problem. Water, air and contaminants get into the brake fluid and ruin the hydraulic properties at play in the brake system. Bleed the brakes thoroughly with the proper class brake fluid. After being bleeding and sealing the brake system, check for leaks and to see if the master cylinder is losing brake fluid (when pumping the brakes). If you have thoroughly bled the system and are not finding leaks or a loss of brake fluid level from the master cylinder, the master cylinder is shot. You can rebuild or purchase a new one. Is car wobbling involved in tire pressure?
My car makes a %26quot;wobbling%26quot; noise, like when you come to a stop it goes %26quot;wobble wobble%26quot; hahah I don't know how to explain it....my mechanic when I just took it in for an oil change said that the tires were over inflated, and he put them back to normal pressure, and after a while that would fix the problem...he said the bearings and everything are ok....also I know I need rear brake shoes, but it doesn't happen only when I put the brakes on...basically is that guy right in saying that the tires will %26quot;get back to normal%26quot; and the wobble will go away after driving on them for a while?

Why won't my rear brakes bleed on my 92 GMC 2500 ?
I changed the leaky left rear whl. cyl. and installed new rear brake shoes. I filled the master, started the truck and proceeded. I was doing the pump %26amp; hold method but could'nt get fluid to come out the left rear bleeder. The brakes are now spongy and seems like the rears are not working. The brakes worked great with the leaky cyl. Maybe I should have just left it leak. What's next and how do I get the light to go out? A good ol clean oil can full of clean brake fluid and a piece of vacuum hose, crack the bleeder open and pump like hell... good luckIf you have the pick-up in the air, and the stands are not under the axle, the weight-sensing proportioning valve thinks there is no weight in the back of the pick-up, and will limit how much fluid gets to the rear wheels.
Place the vehicle either on the ground or on stands. Locate the valve under the rear of the pick-up, and bleed the valve, then the rear wheels (both).

Ok, I took my 98 DOdge neon for a winter check(102,000km's). My horn failed on me too, so I knew I needed a new one. ANyway, in the end, my brake shoes were seperated, my coolant liquid was changing colour and there was rust on my drums, plus I had to get a brand new horn as opposed to a new one. So, parts and labour for horn, brake shoes, coolant flush, drum rotation and winter check up it came to $702
Can you tell me what you think about how much I paid?

That is a term used when they resurface them to true them up at the time you put on new pads or shoes. All discs and drums can have some surface rust in the area where the pads do not touch, that is normal.probably soyes you slightly overpaid a little in the sum of about 300 bucks or more,all of what they done shouldn't have come to no where near that much,its too late now but i hope you don't ever go back the that shop again,that was slightly over pricing that job a little,all shops have different labor rates but that one must have been pretty high,just remember this as a lesson i guess,good luck ,and merry x-mas.You could have done it all your self and saved close to 600 dollars.

At least when you get the work done in a shop, you have a warranty and you get to keep your hands cleanDo it yourself. Most everything you had done can be done yourself. And you would know it was done. I know sometimes , some shops will charge for something but not actually do the service .I'd say that the seller had you bamboozled--the car is in BAD shape, if your description is accurate. The coolant changing color, to me, is a sign of GRAVE internal engine damage, as in oil getting into the coolant, most likely a blown head gasket. The $702 mentioned is barely the tip of the iceberg--you may be looking at a replacement powertrain. The separated brakeshoes and rusty drums lead me to suspect that this Neon was in the drink.you got riped off done it your self for 100 easy easy work

Within the last week i have noticed that sometimes when i brake something grinds like metal on metal. The same noise appears when i put full right lock on and drive off. Its very disconcerting as you can imagine. How much does it cost to change both front pads and shoes including labour on a ford focus Zetec 2003????Whats Wrong and How much!!!???Depends on the garage and quality of parts, and the area you are located. If they are grinding, then you will most likly need pads (for sure), rotors (for sure), and calipers (most likly). The pads sound like they are toast, the rotors probably wont be able to be salavageable because once grinding is present, the rotor wears down quite fast and they get to the discard point very fast. I would personally do calipers because seals can become damaged by being stretched too far and if there is any corrosion on the piston you can damage the internal squair cut o-ring.
My biggest question is, Didn't you hear the squealing? Thats a squealer tab and is there to tell you the pads are low and need to be changed.
As for costs, prices will very from place to place, the quality of parts, the cost of labour, and the extent of damage. It may not even be the brakes, most likly it is, but there can be other things in the systems causeing it. Take it to a brake shop, dealer, garage, ect and have a FULL brake inspection preformed, and anything that needs to be done, do it. I see people go cheap on brakes, and are always asking me %26quot;Do I really need these parts?%26quot;. The only answer I can give them is %26quot;Do you want to stop, or do you want to slow down?%26quot;.
I have done brake jobs on vheicles that have been $100, brake flush only for maintance, and all the way up to a full 100% brake system, caused by oil in the brake system, Every part of the brake system needed to be changed, and the brake pads and shoes were low so thoes were changed too, that was nearly a $7000 job because of the abs, and that was on a common vehicle too. usually a base price at my shop in CALGARY CANADA is $200 for pads, labour, and the initial inspection, some are less as a base, some are more. My shop rate is $92/hour. With rotors, average $400 for parts, labour, inspection, and with calipers, $700 parts, labour, inspection. It all depends on the car, and what is needed to do the job correctly.
And before people start crawling all over me for the prices I gave. NOT EVERY SHOP USES LOW QUALITLY PARTS. The parts my shop uses are gaurenteed to be better then OEM if available, and they can get pricy at times. When it comes to brakes, CHEAP parts are not good, go for Quality, not cost. THis is a P reg (1996) peugeot.. the bad thing was that, it still didnt make much difference to the braking!

There is a good chance it's the rotors too, so you can add at least another $100 for that.
The noise could be either the wear indicator, which is a little piece of tin that rubs the rotor to make a lot of noise to remind you to change the pads, or it's the actual rivits that hold the brake pad onto it's mount. If it's the former, then it's just the pads, if it's the latter, your rotors/drums are probably shot.
The reason you hear it at full right lock is that you are probably doing that right after backing up. Drums readjust themselves to account for wear when you back up, so some metal on the shoes is lightly rubbing the drum, which is actually louder than mashing them into the drum when you brake.A shop will charge you like 69-100 dollars.metal to metal contact invariably means the disks will be damaged patern ones are the cheapest option though they wont last more than two mot's there is also the risk of the caliper piston coming out if the remains of the brake pad wear down sufficiently to enable it to jump outBest thing to do is give your local ford quick fit centre a call, surprisingly they will be as cheap as anywhere.

96 cavalier with bad brakes?
I have a 96 cavalier with a 2.2L. and I am having problems with the brakes! Every time I try to stop the rear brakes lock up and then the abs kicks in and the abs continues pumping till you stop. Note: It has drum brakes. I have already taken apart the rear brakes and checked them out all hardware is good, shoes are good, wheel cylinders are good, I.E. at least they are not leaking, I can't tell if they are frozen but I don't think so. I have also completely changed the brake fluid in it hoping this might help some how, but no luck.
Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be?

I'm thinking bad proportioning valve (or possibly another fault) is causing the rear wheels to lock up. When this happens your EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) is going to start seeing two different wheel speed signals coming from the wheel speed sensors. The rear wheel speed sensors will show a very low speed due to wheel lockup, and the front wheel speed sensors will still show close to actual vehicle speed. This would indicate to the EBCM that there is a wheel slip condition and trigger the EBCM to initiate an ABS stop and engage the ABS system. Just my .02, anyway.
Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be?

When this happens your EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) is going to start seeing two different wheel speed signals coming from the wheel speed sensors. The rear wheel speed sensors will show a very low speed due to wheel lockup, and the front wheel speed sensors will still show close to actual vehicle speed. This would indicate to the EBCM that there is a wheel slip condition and trigger the EBCM to initiate an ABS stop and engage the ABS system. Just my .02, anyway.

So I just got the brake drums and brake shoes on my 1998 honda crv changed (in Montreal, Canada). It is a LX model 4wd. What I don't get is how come each brake drum costs $164.71. They changed both drums in the back so the total drum costs was 329.42, plus the costs of the brake shoes, labour, taxes and some other fancy stuff, bringing the total cost to 659.89 cdn. Yes, rear brakes only! Now, I don't know a whole lot about car parts and their costs - but that sounds like alot to me. 97 grand am maintenance?
Planning on changing the ball joints, outer tie rod ends, brake shoes/disks. Is there any tricky steps I need to be aware of when doing these jobs? any special tools? easy or hard to do? have any links to steps on how to change these parts out?

You will need a pick or a small screwdriver to push the adjustment arm (that spins the star, also the item that you hear clicking when you spin the star to tighten the brakes). Take tool and push arm away from the center of the vehicle while you use a flat-head screwdriver to spin the star. This will allow you to back off the brakes, if that is what is holding them on.
Check your drum for grooving or excessive wear. Replace if necessary.

2004 Dodge Neon Advice?
Hi I have a 2004 dodge neon SXT 2.0L I recenlty purchased it back in Oct 2009 the dealership said that they changed the brake pads and the shoes (it was even stated on the safety inspection sheet) but I noticed that my front brakes squeak when I almost come to a full stop. Also I noticed last night that there is a faint grinding noice when I drive on my drivers side. My boyfriends dad and brother said it is probably the brake pads or the rotors but how can that be when the dealership just changed them?? Please any advice would help! How to remove hub from drum brakes?
i have spent the majority of today trying to change the rear shoes on my wifes peuegot 306, but havent had much luck. the hub on the drivers side came off without a problem, but the one on on the passenger side seems a bit stiff. i have tried levering it out with a screw driver, banging it with a hammer, but still it wont budge, anyone have any adeas?How to remove hub from drum brakes?you have to back the brake shoes off from the drum, on the backside of the hub you will see 1 or 2 holes with rubber plugs in them, pull the plugs out and look in the hole and you will see a gear wheel with a rod riding on the gear, you have to push the rod out of the way and turn the gear upward and that will back the shoes away from the drum so the drum will come off.How to remove hub from drum brakes?sometimes they will put two screws towards the center of the drum. otherwise it's just stuck keep workin it make sure the e-brake isn't onHow to remove hub from drum brakes?Start by trying to spray some penetrating oil in around the studs to losen any rust bonds. Next step would be to use an air hammer arond between the studs, dont hit the studs. if that dont work then what may have happened is the break shoes have worn into the drum itself and have created a lip on the outside endge and the shoes are catching on it. to fix simply adjust the star wheel there should be a access hole on the bottom side of backing plate.
good luckheat the centre with a blow torch then hit it very hard with a copper mallet whilst rotating the drum by hand .....usually does it....levering is not teh best way as it is more difficult to pull the thing off at an angleu need to back out the brake adjuster. Ck back of the drum for peek hole and there is where you place a screw driver in the back to back out the brake adjuster.
good luckhi joe..i think whats happend is the drum itself has worn to a point where the shoesare behind the lip worn into the drum and its this thats holding it in place...2 heafty screwdrivers at 9 and 3 oclock should do it-your right to smack it with a hammer--force screwdrivers and smack at the same time[not forgetting to loosen the hand brake cabble off so the shoes can move back in]...once your ready to reasemble dont forget to remove the lip on the inside of the drum with a grinder...doesnt have to be neat..this will let you adjust the shoes up before the drum goes back on...the trick is to get the shoes to just touch the serface of the drum.[if not readjust and try again--once the drom is back in place it shouldnt move freely but have a slight drag].self adjusters somtimes dont work correctally and your left with spongy brakes...hope this helps.

Local Ford dealer screwed up my Fiesta's brakes, where do I stand legally?
I've had a V-reg (2000) Ford Fiesta 1.25 for a little over six months, and the foot brake has gotten progressively worse over time, so earlier this week I took the car in to a Ford dealership in Kent for a service. I told them specifically that the brakes were definitely not right when I took it in.
The next day they call me back and tell me the rear brake shoes and cylinders needed replacing, but that otherwise the car was fine. They also changed the brake fluid and engine oil. I agreed to pay the 拢330 for them to do the job and picked up the car the following day.
When I tried using the brakes I noticed there had been no improvement, and although the handbrake was now a little stiffer I was disappointed that the fault I took it in for had not been rectified. On top of this the (!) brake warning light started flashing intermittently on the dashboard. By this point it was Friday night so I had no way of getting in touch with them about it.
Saturday morning, I start the car up, roll down the driveway and realise the foot brake has completely gone, there is no braking whatsoever with it and the pedal is really floppy. The handbrake still works but that's it.

The parts at Autozone are $34.99 for the drum, $16.99 for the shoes and $7.99 for the repair kit which contains all the springs and what not.

Be careful not to pump the brakes with the drums off, or the cups will pop out of the cylinders and make a big mess. if there is brake fluid leaking around the cylinders, it would be a good idea to change them out, however, opening the brake lines means they will have to be bled of air later.

How do i release a Renault 5 rear brake drum?
Hi, ive messed up. ive changed the wheel cylinder and shoes on the rear of my Renault 5 (1996). I did the nearside first, it was alittle tight getting the drum back on so i knocked it home with a hammer and went about doing the offside.
as i was putting the drum back on the offside, I backed off the adjuster and it occured to me that was why the nearside was tight to get on.
anyway, I tried putting the wheels back on, but the nearside rear wont turn as i drive. Now I cant get he damn Drum off to back off the adjuster.
Ive just spent an entire day trying to get it off but it just wont budge.
we're due to go on holiday in this car in approx 36 hours!
What on earth am i going to do?
How do i get the drum off? the handbrake is backed off, theres no pressure in the cylinder as ive disconnected the hose. It must be the adjuster pushing the shoes into the drum. Ive tried hammers, levers etc, but it just will not come off

3 find a skip, cut along the A frame, and th B post, then itll fit into the skip and you wot have to worry about it anymore... #
seriously, phone renault and ask to speak to a mechanic. but ive had to do this many times, on many different cars, and as has already been suggested, its bloody hard work, and its almost always scraps the wheel drum.
this is what happens when unqualified folk start playing around trying to save a few quid... so how much is this going to cost to put right? and im sorry chap, but who are you trying to kill, yourself or some innocent guy on the other carriageway?
